Connecting Through the Globe

Minnesota West Community & Technical College

Program Summary

Connecting Through the Globe is a journalism lab that will offer all Nobles County students in 5th – 8th grade the opportunity to create podcasts, vodcasts, and blog posts as part of the Kids College curriculum. Kids College is a week-long summer program designed to reach out to students especially First Generation College bound students. This opportunity is limited to the first 120 registrants. The content of the journalism lab, Connecting Through the Globe, will allow the students to act as reporters, bloggers, and vodcast/podcast creators for the local media outlet The Daily Globe.
Aaron Hagen, Daily Globe Community Content Coordinator, will lead the class mentoring students in creating public media that engages questions of equity, good citizenship, privacy, collaboration, and web safety. Students will report on peer activities and youth experiences throughout Kids College.
Flip cameras, digital cameras, computers loaded with video and word processing software, and headsets with microphones will be used to capture digital information to transform into journalism. Content will be used in the online and print versions of The Daily Globe. Video snippets will be used in promotional material and on the last day of Kids College at the “graduation” ceremony. A private Shutterfly site will be created to teach participants that not everything should be viewed publicly, and how a password protected site can keep personal information private.
Kids College has been designed as…
1. A Career Exploration experience for 5th through 8th graders.
2. A Leadership experience for area minority teens who serve as Kids College Mentors.
3. A Connection for minority students and the Minnesota West faculty and staff.
4. An Orientation to College Life and the amazing possibilities available to ALL students.
5. A Partnership of education entities working together to provide opportunities.
6. A Safe and Caring environment for all youth.
